Sherlock: A Study in Pink parts 1-3, is now available from Titan Books in paperback and Kindle editions. s faithful adaptation can do nothing to remedy, such as John’s date Sarah being reduced to a mere damsel in distress. Both men are linked with Doctor Who – Moffat is the current Who showrunner – hence the similarities in the shows’ style, writing and characterisation. There’s a hint of John Steed about the latter character, as we first behold this decidedly dapper figure leaning casually on an umbrella. When the villain reveals yet another clue in his cruel series of puzzles, John is still fuming and refuses to help, which makes his compassion counterproductive.

It’s a faithful rendition of the BBC drama, complete with Sherlock/Benedict Cumberbatch and his hooded eyes, Mycroft/Gatiss sneering down his aquiline nose and Moriarty/Andrew Scott all wide-eyed innocence. Adapting the episodes of the smash-hit TV series starring worldwide superstars Benedict Cumberbatch (upcoming Doctor Strange) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit).On the other hand, the hilarity over Sherlock’s improvised salutation, “Welcome to London”, after he and John challenge the wrong suspect in the back of a taxi, doesn’t really work on the page. I have a copy of the original Japanese printing of the bilingual edition due to a dear friend’s gift. The comic has offered in a limited edition “English/Japanese” bilingual version, with the help of Gatiss and Moffat, by the English Agency in Japan, but it isn’t an easy find for UK and US readers.

As a boxed set of graphic novel compilations of monthly comic book versions of an English translation of a Japanese manga adaptation of a 2010 television reimagining of the adventures of a Victorian prose character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, there was a danger that this new edition of the first series of Sherlock might end up being far removed from its source material.

The manga convincingly presents Watson as we first saw him on screen, an ex-army doctor traumatised by his experience in Afghanistan (rendered as a page of splintered images).
